Wasting Light by Foo Fighters | Album Review

Are these guys not one of the biggest rock bands in the world? Arguably they are the biggest but looking at the attention the Foo Fighters get for the smallest release is something only unsigned bands can dream off.

On April 12th 2011, the latest album from the Foo’s is released. Wasting Light the album marking 16 years together after a mix of works in their discography. Is it their finest work yet?

In a word, yes. But how? This album has been produced by returning back to the garage days rather than the extortionate expense of high quality studio equipment and electronic alterations here there and everywhere. Their music video to Rope was recorded using old VHS camera rather than the now standard HQ HD and all that jazz. This is raw and back to the core from Dave Grohl‘s San Fernando Valley home garage.

From the demented beginnings with Bridge Burning it is solid Rock throughout with the occasional harmonious soft piece which we all don’t mind. Grohl sounds incredibly relaxed, the lyrics flow out of him with such aptitude, virtue and genuine glee. Even on the the ultimate piece of material White Limo I can feel the crazy smile of borderline insanity appearing on my own face when listening to this vocal screeching, guitar riff frenzied number. Frickin’ awesome it is.

One track I felt compelled to listen to extremely carefully whilst hopefully hearing a prominent bassline was I Should’ve Known with a guest appearance Krist Novoselic – if you don’t know who he is then hang your head in shame. After the soft rock start with the angelic violin hovering over the passionate, poetic material it then builds into a fierce rumble. The bass roared out, it is brilliant. I swear down, I almost cried. The fingers almost abused the strings of the bass. If they could bruise then they’d be black and blue. Acoustic version coming? I would like to think.

Walk is the closer to the astonishing album which seems to be the more personal of tracks. Personal to Grohl. It’s as if he is talking about how he works with his music as he occasionally gets lost with his ways as a performer with the Foo’s then off to do another project and then back and forth again. That was my interpretation. It appears that he has very happy with where he is right now and ferociously loving it all.

Throughout the record it is riff driven, head banging, lyric singing, feet tapping awesomeness. I don’t wish to sound like it is something I’ve never heard before but this is classic. It’s as if the years together have all come to a head on one album.

This is not Dave Grohl’s band. This is also Chris Shiflett’s, Nate Mendel’s, Taylor Hawkins’ and Pat Smear’s band too. We shouldn’t forget that. Excellent work. Truly excellent. Watch a special live recorded piece of the whole entire album below.

UK readers, I advise you get your tickets for Milton Keynes Bowl sooner rather than later. You know it’ll be a sell-out event.

Wasting Light by Foo Fighters is out globally on April 11th 2011 from RCA Records.
