Smother by Wild Beasts | Album Review

One of the best pieces of musical poetry ever released in the whole wide world ever in my opinion is Grace by Jeff Buckley. Imagine what he would be like now if he hadn’t so tragically been taken away from this Earth and also, in a band. Perhaps an unfair comparison in some peoples eyes and/or ears but I believe that the Wild Beasts are a delightful act that have striking similarities to the passed away maestro.
Following the justifiable success of Two Dancers, Smother is the third album by this poetic group oozing sheer talent. With the music of the ‘Beasts is typically solemn, therapeutic and inspiring the lyrics are lustful, tenacious and subtly operatic in places.
The track Deeper is bringing out the singer within me. Beautifully sung with great substance, strength and compassion. Invisible reminds me of The Loneliness of a Tower Crane Driver by Elbow. Intense but still fluid and smooth which then goes into the single release, Albatross – video below – which is tender music for the silky sheets. Smother is most definitely the soundtrack to a quiet evening in with plenty of candles lit around a table for two.
The Cumbrian band will hopefully be a favourite once again with the Mercury Music Prize board but this year rather than a well-deserved nomination, fingers crossed the award will be theirs.
Smother by Wild Beasts is released by Domino Records on Monday May 9th 2011.
