Counting What Ifs by boyChild ft. Soundmouse | EP Review

With the seraphic vocals of Soundmouse you begin to immediately slumber down, relax and you can feel the weight on your shoulders disperse into the air. The sombre vibe from this ambient electro-acoustic work is filled with minimal yet carefully constructed orchestration with some Burial crackling effects giving it a rawness, an authenticity, even making it moody.
Music effects you in different ways. It can motivate and it can calm. When listening to the delightful work of boyChild, one tends to feel the latter but in such an immense fashion.
The tracks are in different mixes. The original is the original. The No Beats version is exactly that, stripped of the tech drum beats enabling the piano riffs to become more prominent. Furthermore, on Vika’s version, it is simply the piano taking the whole tune. Absolutely terrific. So sad but optimistic.
The Bug Compass version is not much of a track and can appear more of a stuttering accident in some people’s eyes and ears but it is experimental and you can decide your own thoughts.
The better release out of the selection for me would be the Darkhorse Ambient Room version which is the main track, filled out with a more solid drum beat with a fuller sound throughout with violins appearing again, more prominent than in the original. A delightful dreamscape can be pictured when listening to this, it is so appeasing.
This is a wondrous piece of material. There are to be more good things to come, I’m very sure.
Counting What Ifs by boyChild ft. Soundmouse is out now released by Three Sixty Records.
