Pitchtuner

ttj90

Pitchtuner have a certain sound which I cannot quite put my finger on. Is it Gary Numan? Is it Whomadewho? Robots In Disguise? Or is it just similar but still managing to be that little bit more so, individual? Or is it Erasure with aggression, distortion and a faster beat? Or better still, Scissor Sisters with a testosterone injection.

You have got a rock style band with only 3 musicians but it is filled up deeply with electronics enabling it to travel through the masses of appreciators in Europe, very Tech Noir. I really like that genre which is something a little unfamiliar on the island of the UK.

If the ladies fancy tarting themselves up with lavish purple lipstick and mascara, chucking on their fishnet tights, pink high heels and ripping a couple of black t-shirts for the night out in the club, then this could be for you.

Flic Flac is out now and the video below is of a track from previous years as it’s the best quality found.

Exit Calm

ttj90

Quite possibly the shortest band review yet because for me, their music speaks for itself. I envisage this band to be bigger than Kasabian and I would hope so too. I’m very much hooked into their sound after seeing them live as a support band. I ended up preferring them to the main act. Just listen to the passionate, psychedelic warmth that wraps around you. Brilliant!

Venus In The Dust

ttj90

As anyone will know, if they peruse these pages regularly they will know of my slight fascination for French Electronica. So of course I jumped up at the sight of seeing Venus In The Dust despite no electronica being labelled.

We have mainly an acoustic style set up. Strings and piano’s peppered everywhere almost untidyly but neatly falling in the right places. These are supporting the darling singer who is seductively caressing the microphone with her lustful, saccharin vocals. Let Yourself Drown touches on that sultry dark side. Some tracks are soft, slow and the occasional ones more upbeat, in French and also, (being metaphorically descriptive) very “Sunday In The Park”. Reminiscent of Josh Weller doing the odd show tune.

This is Jazz club with out the bling and Soul without the tears being arousing, subtly passionate and in a positively, pleasant and complimentary way, also with a touch of filth. Easy listening and delightfully sexy stuff.

Porcupine Tree

ttj90

When it comes to a chillout act, Porcupine Tree do exactly that. Chill you out good and proper.

Having an overall sound that resembles the best of Placebo, The Bluetones and on their track Drawing The Line I can also hear Duran Duran.

I do quite enjoy listening to work such as this but at the same time I am also feeling a slight emptiness as I think some of the tracks are not quite as full in sound as they could be. What I do like however is the fact that some tracks are quite ambient, relaxing and soothing and others have a dark, moody quality and depth. So really, we have a good mix.

The Incident is the seventh in the discography and you can check them out here.

The Big Pink

ttj90

Immediately when pressing play for the first track of this debut album A Brief History Of Love you fall into a relaxed state of consciousness. When the lyrics begin, you believe that you know exactly what you are going to get. You hope it is going to be like it is, and let me tell you, yes people, it is.

The Big Pink are obviously to me anyways influenced by the psychedelic dance waves of the late 80’s and early 90’s without mentioning any particular bands or artists. MGMT have a similar sound but I am now afraid to say, they can move over.

There is an anthemic feel, an uplifting nature to all the tracks and the warmth it carrys takes the chilling cold away from all shivering parts of your soul.

The music is intrciate and sounds complicated but truly it is just very smartly mixed. A fullness in sound and soothing vocals are heard, welcomed and even make the spine quiver a touch.

One track Dominos has been heard by many already (the video is below) It has a nice drum and bass feel, yet it is a simple eclectic mix of synth, drums and positive lyrical aura. Love Is Vain is also as enchanting as well as Velvet but with a darker tech noir tinge to it. I adore the warmth, harmony, emotion and depth to Tech Noir.

Yes man, this is good, this is really good, I’d get this if I were you.

Shamanix

ttj90

I’ll be honest and say I didn’t feel taken-a-back by the music I heard on Shamamix’s MySpace player. But that was at first.

When I see the word Electronica I almost immediately compare it to what I have in my Electronica folder from the international music store. But that was wrong of me.

Being as this is experimental film soundtrack stuff you can quite easily feel it warming the silent moments through the unscripted scenes in an emotional excerpt from a film.

The harmonious tunes that are played are soothing, healing and rather tight production wise but (using that word again) I think more depth is required in the sound as well as making them slightly more minimalistic. one or two tracks could go much deeper as the Demo track on the player is reminiscent of the dark, sordid Japenese artists work such as Tsuyoshi Suzuki.

Overall the work created is someting to be proud of and there are many a movie moment where I can hear the track being the addition to an intense, poignant or feel-good clip.

3OH!3

ttj90

With the British summer time drawing to an end music lovers will say that they have been introduced to some quality tunes over the recent couple of months due to the festival season.

3OH!3 are, in America, HUGE. Ask any random lad from the Midlands and they will say, “You what? Three o Three?!”

Sean Foreman and Nathaniel Motte have had ten’s of millions of hits on MySpace and YouTube alone, and where are they?

This weekend Reading & Leeds and in the UK, we are a little distant with this current trend. (Like most things) Don’t Trust Me is one of the highest played tracks I’ve ever seen and heard ever on the net.

These lads from have created a storm of followers with (once again using the appropriate word of) eclectic musical picks in their music to produce a sound that will no doubt catch on with every late Teen, early Twenty-something dude and dudette and/or perhaps the slightly immature, thirty-something.

Their album release Want has some catchy rock riffs, simple lyrics but yet smart and that pop-sound hook which will grow on you to the point it will feel like you’ve had that song in your head for the last couple of years.

The lastest tracks on their MySpace player show more development. A more aggressive Hip-Hop tinge has been incorporated on one or two tracks which will go down well and with the Katy Perry link-up on Starstrukk, the doors to further progression are surely to open. Having 3OH!3 crossing the genres like so many are nowadays doing, these boys will definately catch on.

Simian Mobile Disco

ttj90

Simian Mobile Disco return with their second album Temporary Pleasure following the awesome success of Attack, Decay, Sustain, Release. This too is truly a brilliant electro record which I believe does not get the justification it deserves.

10000 Horses Can’t Be Wrong is a fine example of how you can gather a group of very simple chords and make it quite a euphoric little number. This is smart arrangement and production. Quite clever stuff. Get a preview of this on their MySpace player and other’s too. It’s nice to see that they’ve uploaded a few to listen-before-you-buy.

Every tune in a sense is striking, minimalistic electro subtley bursting with soul and disco house vibes. Cruel Intentions featuring Beth Ditto is the embodiment of that. Whilst other tracks will have a darker, tech noir-ness about them and others will have an aura of 80’s synths, this album is very much a true eclectic mix.

These boys are Far Too Loud, soon to be parting ways are the duo to do solo projects so Far Too Loud will still be existing which is fantastic news and Neurodriver is now born!

I love Far Too Loud! They have the sound that levitates you, picks you up and down a few shots of fresh air ready to take on the world. Inspiring, passionate and filthy! A sheer electronic delight.

Check out their tracks! Top ones for me are What’s Goin’ On, Play It Loud and the new All Is Machine record available from their MySpace site .

Meat Katie twisting about with his buddy Dylan Rhymes on this bouncy number that’s got a bigger hook than a Peter Pan story! This is brilliant, it genuinely made me “laugh out loud” with delight when this kicked in.

Dirty Weekend

ttj90

Initially when I saw the name of the band I quietly sniggered childishly to myself thinking that this could be quite cool.

The first track on their MySpace player We Had Hysterics sounded very amateurish and the quality of production was a little lame. It seems a little dirty, crackly and not particularly refined but with a touch of further tweeking it’s potentially a masterclass record. Nothing wrong with the song in itself but the sound released. It lacks depth and seems a little weak.

I went through the tracks available, listened but if I hear anymore more high notes from that guitar I would steal it from his hands and put a chainsaw through it using the torn Fender carcass as bonfire wood.

The music is there, it sounds alright but why all the strumming on the E string over the 20th fret?
There’s just no need for goodness sake, it annoyed me incredibly which surprised even myself.

Potential exists in this band. But some refinement is required. Massive.

Wild Beasts

ttj90

It is not very often you feel immediately ambuscaded into a sound, surrounded by the tenderness that the vocalist from the Wild Beasts, Hayden Thorpe produces with such passive vehemence.

Flowing delightfully the music hooks you into a mood of a great apathy, soothing everything in your bones with a superbly orchestrated sound that is wonderously delectable and sublime.

Hooting & Howling which is fortunately on their MySpace player has a haunting, almost sinister parallelism with the late and great Jeff Buckley. The album Grace released by the late Mr Buckley is one that is chosen to be heard at rare particular times. An album which must be in everyones music collection due to the sweet poetics and of course, gracefulness it possess.

Wild Beasts have released a piece of work which competes with that choice. This follow up to their previously released Limbo, Panto. A fantastic, musical dreamscape of rythym, harmony and sheer elegance.

Get it, get it now.

Julian Plenti

ttj90

What I like about the crossover of genres nowadays is the fact that a musician can expand his creative works across the categorised realms. An album can have different styles throughout making it more interesting to us the listeners. Paul Banks aka Julian Plenti has the ability to mix the styles making it still Alternative. I guess then that the previous comments have been written uselessly but you understand the point I am trying to make I suppose.

On the album Julian Plenti Is A Skyscraper we have the Interpol musician on a solo run developing some semi-heavy, rock music which fills the room with essences of dischordas does On The Esplanade. Delightful strings and piano as there are on his track No Chance Survival that could quite easily be played with only a Spanish guitar. Anthemic trumpets elevating your spirits. It’s quite a clever and masterful piece of work.

There is so much variety and you could appreciate it with friends or rather selfishly. Very similar to Beck, without seeming so comical. Quite intimate without seeming so claustrophobic. Clever.

Julian Plenti Is A Skyscraper is out now.

Reverend And The Makers

ttj90

Having a mix of styles like what Reverend & The Makers do, it takes no scientist to fathom the chemistry that makes this band so highly appreciated by people liking the indie, dance, rock or whatever scene your bag may be.

Mark Jones (bless him, no one was at his Glastonbury gig other than me) of the Wall of Sound record label snapped up this band in 2005 and must be overwhelmed at how this band are doing. As well as what they are going to do.

This is a band of musicians who love music and that is all that they live for. You feel this in their latest release A French Kiss In The Chaos due to the happiness that exuburates from their sound with electic keyboards, guitars full of vitality and a bounce in every track.

The Arctic Monkeys also from Sheffield do lack something that this band have. It is quite simply wisdom and experience in life that only Jon McClure can pass off with.

No Soap In A Dirty Water is a progressive track that just encapulates these traits obtained over the years building into bouyancy that allows the listener to smile in superabundance.

If the track Silence Is Talking doesn’t do anything for you, then you stick to the kiddie bands then and let the grown-ups listen to a proper Sheffield band.

This is good.

Moby

ttj90

If there is a nice bloke in the music industry then Moby is one of them. He is smart and the product of his own hard work. All success is down to his own graft. I would assume he is not into creating his own awareness but casting his own opinions and beliefs through various mediums has made him his own publicist. I like the man.

Everyone in the developed world has heard a Moby track, it is impossible not to have done unless you’ve been living in solitary confinement for most of the last decade. (Ok so Charles Bronson probably hasn’t heard of him then)

But after the storming success of the play album released in ‘99 it is no wonder that the masses of techno appreciators across the sub-genres are waiting to have a listening at the latest work of sublime, electronic artwork.

Moby tends to steer down a lonely road. Or to put differently, the music I hear from him tends to be heard within oneself rather than collectively. You listen to his tracks and you’re taken away to a selfish place where only you matter. Just like on JTLF on his MySpace player.

Uplifting, melodic electronics with strings beautifully orchestrated and arranged right from the first track Division with almost haunting notes and as described by himself, “mournful”.

There’s no doubt or question about his production abilities because this man is an electro genius which perhaps define the word Ambient.

Platinum quality once more just like the previous. Excellent work considering that apparently “No-one listens to techno”.
