Chase and Status

ttj90

Chase & Status have been around for a few years but it wasn’t until the recent remix of the White Lies’ release Death, that they caught my attention. The reason is quite simply, I do not like it.

So, as I will give everything a chance I investigated further into the band being as Mr Zane Lowe was raving about them. (I respect his judgement a vast majority of the time)

What I found was an an album called More Than Alot. Now this, THIS possessed a tune that made me shiver. Eastern Jam (which happens to be quite fortunately on their MySpace) made me bellow a roar of laughter in slight shock. What a “Cool As..” tune indeed!

More Than Alot begins with an easy listening, dreamscape DnB track which hooks you right into the album immediately with a steady pace making you question what the hell are they going to do next?! This is awesome!

Following that I swear has BBC Radio1’s, Scott Mills’ sidekick Chappers with a bunged up nose narrating through the Music Club. Got to love them bongo’s too.

Against All Odds features East Ham, Hip Hop Producer Kano vocalising a funky, headnodding, breakbeat floor-filler.

I could quite easily go on but the fact is, this album is a true delight with clean, tidy, seamless production with great, bouncing beats. The lovely Dub on Streetlife is sweet. SmashTV is an aggressive, club house wonder but if any deserve a mention it is Pieces featuring Plan B. When that kicks in, you damn well know about it. Thumping, height-of-the-evening, hardcore breaks. What impressed me most about this track is the way the two farthest ends of comparable genres are gelled and waxed together with a really shiney polish. Plan B’s had great backing. He’ll be facing the stratosphere destined to be in it after the release of his debut album The Defamation of Strickland Banks is out in the very near future.

More Than Alot the Drum and Bass, Breakbeat masterclass is out now. But at the minute, it’s all about the other Being.

Woo Boost by Rusko

ttj90

Rusko dropping some filthy dubstep tuneage which is surrounded by a treasure trove of various remixes as well as a House version from the man himself. But surely there is not one that has the floor ripping capabilities as the original..

Bandwagon Junglist by Marlow

Personally, when it comes to the world of dubstep, Marlow is part of the hierarchy. Check out his remix of Owl City’s Fireflies too. The original is number one in the UK charts and he makes it sooo much better.

This Could Be Real by Sub Focus

ttj90

After a fantastic 2009 for SubFocus he’s starting as he means to go on with the release of this new track which has the typical variations for the hardcore clubber and the ever popular radio listener. This has a delightful house feel along with a right grimey dub tinge to it. No doubt this is going to everywhere and if it isn’t, WTF not?

Age Of Dub by Ed Solo

ttj90

After the last decade dubstep sneaked into various DJ’s vinyl box in many various remixes. With the dawn of a new decade, the Teens will have Dub everywhere and it will further come into it’s own. Ed Solo shows us all how it is done. 2010 is the year of Dubstep.

Cattle Prod by Marlow

ttj90

Every now and then you’ve got to throw something a little deeper and harder into the mix and there is no-one better to do it than the main man Marlow with this bombing bassline number along with some badass synths. Keep your ears out for him as I expect 2010 to be a big dubstep year and he will be up there at the top with all the big names. He already is a big name in the Dub world actually!

Fat Freddy’s Drop

ttj90

How fantastic it is to listen to something which is sooo cool.

From NZ, Fat Freddy’s Drop are from the other side of the world to where I am. This second studio album titled Dr Boondigga & The Big BW is a delightful ensemble of instruments from trumpets to harmonicas, digital effects and vocals, bass and some lovely deep dub sounds which have influenced the band from across the globe. It doesn’t sound messy, cluttered but refined and clean. The engineering work is truly a masterful piece of production.

Soulful to the max, a reggae feel yet with a more blues tint to it withoutcoming across as bluesy. the dance tunes hum and bounce brilliantly and the more lyrical tracks are soft, sweet and harmonious to the point where I feel I’m still experiencing summer.

The Camel featuring Alice Russel (which is a shame not to hear on their MySpace player but it is the track below) is a perfect example of the entire bands talents all working superbly well as the comprehensive collective. The track sounds simple and light but the bass is absolute quality with such a dreamy and airy ambience to it.

This is fat, funky, soul food for the brain in the form of some warm vibrations. Totally non-offensive, soothing and healing. A great record and I am happy it has managed to get to these shores too.

“If there’s ever a dance track which embodies all the traits required to be an All-Time Classic, the giver of the spinal chills, the giver of goosebumps, the giver of the ultimate head-nodding, foot-stomping or just quite simply a track that’ll make you weep due to the fantastic awesomeness, this is THAT tune.”
