The Black Keys

11 May

I will never say to other people that I know a lot about music. It is impossible to hear about everything that goes on in the World around us. So many times there are bands that don’t get the break that they need to be able to unleash the terrific tunes that they conceive. Sometimes they manage to do it but they don’t get heard by everyone in their targeted demographic. The record company’s sometimes fail on the Artists behalf.

I am just wondering how an awesome band such as The Black Keys have totally deserted my radar though.

I’ve never heard of them up until yesterday. I am entirely overwhelmed by the glorious psychedelic, Bluesy-Rock sound which could put many a 60′s Woodstock band to utter shame. This is superb!

BROTHERS is their 8th studio album – 9th if you count their collaborating work on Blackroc released last year – and I swear it is the most excellent piece of production I’ve heard quite possibly ever.

Having a sound that is so reminiscent to the likes of – Better still in fact – MUMFORD & SONS meeting THE DOORS on a comedown Sunday afternoon after a LED ZEPPELIN and ROLLING STONES joint venture.

Lyrically, every song tells a story. Musically this album is Harmonious Blues with a moody Rock and Indie style that sweetly hums along as an autobiographical moment to whatever stage of your life you’re currently in.

There is a song for everyone. I’m not going to go through all of them because quite honestly, it should only take one or two of them.

I am gong backwards for a change, checking out their previous material. I believe this is a great piece of songwriting. Awards will be magnetised to this record without doubt. And if I’m wrong, that means those who decide where the awards go to, are seriously very wrong indeed.

BROTHERS is released on the 18th May. For goodness sake, please your heart, soul and mind and get it. Pre-order it here. You won’t mind selling your soul to this. And yeah, you’ve got to watch the video’s below to meet Frank the Funkasaurus Rex.

Many thanks to npr.com/music for indirectly allowing me to do this review. To hear the album in it’s entirety before release, CLICK HERE! And pre-order it by clicking the iTunes link below.

THE MAN who managed to redefine the unwritten rules of Sex, Drugs and Rock N F’kn Roll is back. This time he’s out with friends on what is actually classed as his first solo album. What an ensemble of friends this guy has.

On this metal A-list they include Chris Cornell, Fergie, Iggy Pop, Ozzy, Lemmy and Dave Grohl to name a few. Working with the latter alongside old amigo Duff McKagen on the instrumental track Watch This, you expect Rock and what do you get? Pretty much what you ought to be with palm mutes everywhere, heavy riffs which will delightfully remind the old GNR fans have how it used to be.

This is a very American Rock sound rather than tipping into the heavier Metal side. It’s more melodic and pleasantly vocal with the harmonious backing. You know, like how Aerosmith would do it. However, there are one or two tracks that dive a little deeper. Nothing To Say featuring M. Shadow from Avenged Sevenfold possesses solid, lightening riffs. If you’ve got to the end of Guitar Hero 3, then you’ll be right with me on this one.

I feel a sense of achievement for him when he plays because no matter what’s has happened, he’s still going strong. He’s still got it. For an old school Rock fan, it’s like listening to an old friend from school who’s finally made it to the big-time.

This is a cool album, very solid, very typical almost with solo moments galore. I find it good to hear the collaborations working in Slash’s style of Rock, even though their are moments where he is tinkering in the singers more usual style like M. Shadow’s and also with Saint Is A Sinner featuring Rocco DeLuca which is more like a Spanish acoustic along with the big band style. Cracking production on that as well as throughout the whole record.

One track that makes me smile is We’re All Gonna Die featuring Iggy Pop. He sings a bit like Axl, more so when he does the speaking parts but considering you’ve two veteran Rockers who have both been on the brink of death through their antics over the decades, this track makes me nod rhythmically in empathy.

If Beautiful Dangerous featuring Fergie is not released as a single, the management need shooting. It’s the best song she’s ever sung on. The inner Rock Chick has been unleashed and the woman can knock out some notes indeed.

For now though, solid Rock N F’kn Roll dudes.

Black Rock by Joe Bonamassa

BLACK ROCK is the latest release from the Blues/Rock guitaring maestro that is, Joe Bonamassa.

I could say living legend but if he has only recently passed my ears then I’ve either my head in the sand or his riffs haven’t carried over to me far enough.

Having recently played at the Royal Albert Hall with living legend Eric Clapton – that was more appropriate I think – I noticed his performance is truly heartfelt, honestly passionate and very powerful too.

This is the kind of mature music my father would have listened to and loved. Now I have to say, being as the candles are further burning for me, I am falling for this too. This is done the way it should be.

He has great soul and a voice that simply speaks the truth. I have found that Blues music to this degree with quoting any movies has to be lived and experienced to be able to genuinely sing and play it with your heart and spirit. He feels the music he sings, it’s a part of him and the guitaring is a blessing. I have heard many acts over the years doing their best to eminate the greats but it is such a refreshing experience for me to listen to a great with some up-to-date – already – classics. Blue & Evil just rock.

The video below doesn’t get any fresher either.

Break My Soul by Hybrid

To have a tune which has some delightful female-sung vocals over the top and inbetween some dark, sordid drum and bass nowadays like this crawling up the charts faster than a squirrel with a firework up it’s backside is simply blissful.

You know when you listen to some music like an unknown album or something random on the radio, then all of a sudden a tune comes on and you’re immediately taken aback, moved, unhinged by the sheer excellence emitting from your speakers or headphones? I’ve just had that. You’re wearing your haunting war-face to this dark floorfiller.

We Have Band

03 Apr

EXPERIMENTAL would be an appropriate word used in some opinions regarding the sound of We Have Band but this is has quite a familiar feel. Just with the 21st Century twist. Take the Human League and collaborating them with Morrissey, remixed by The Whip.

The electronics are not strong enough nor as prominent to be classed as Electro. The instruments are not hard enough to be classed as Rock, so we have a subtle crossover and a delicate blend between the two.

WHB, their debut album introduces you with Piano. A minimal track which has an uplifting brightness as if the sun is breaking through, beginning to shine for the first time on a cloudy morning. The individual talents of the entire three members shows of more so the production skills rather than the playing of instruments as a minimal almost throughout alike to The xx except with more warmth.

Hear It In The Cans for me is one of the smarter numbers as the structure of the track is varied with levels but combined well resulting in almost an intricate track, but so sweet and passive is really delivered quite cleverly. Their single release Divisive is brilliant, 80′s synth disco style. Then with You Came Out (below) with the random Punk-esque vocals and the Indie harmony supporting. It’s so crazy it seems to work.

The songs are diverse yet simple, complex but effortless. It is creative, discerning and profound.

WHB by We Have Band is out now.

Grizzly Bear

20 Mar

Searching through my wee collection of humble noise, I thought I would opt for something I have not yet heard that falls into the “having-a-bath-with-a-glass-of-wine” genre. When it comes to folk, you would normally find it suitable for such an occasion. Grizzly Bear however, were positively not this time.

Resemblances of Beck, Damon Albarn and the late, great Jeff Buckleyto me were quite apparent. The gracious guitar work, choir-like background harmonies with the modern day touches of production work lifted the sounds from their album, Veckatimest, to a higher level. Experimenting in the studio with digital dabbling of the acoustics has levitated this enchanting material to cloud nine heights.

Grizzly Bear have created a complex studio album which has taken great thought, delicate hands and careful skill in turn, accomplishing the final work that appears refined and simple. This is true finesse.

The songs on this ingenious, dozen-track LP have been finely spun unto me to the point where it feels like I have been wily spiked. Elated and refreshed after listening to Ready, Able with the beating, palm-muted top E string with the harps tinkered I find exquisitely boggling. This very track shows the amount of detail that has gone into this highly acclaimed release. All the more popular is Two Weeks. Having had airplay on many a station, many listens on a car advertisement and such a quirky yet simple video on the ‘Tube, it has created great success for these boys from Brooklyn, NY.

Veckatimest, must be one of the most savvy folk albums to date.

Frightened Rabbit

17 Mar

RECENTLY with band such as Mumford & Sons, Fleet Foxes and here Frightened Rabbit we are blessed to have a great country brimming with talent. More so, Scotland.

Glasgow is the home of these boys that bring a stew of wondrous sounds of big, cylindrical drums, piano’s and great harmonies of an orchestral, uplifting feel with the soothing, rawness of the Strathclyde dialect.

Shrouded in warmth, salubrious with a sense of personal completion are received in the songs. Caressed with the “everything-is-going-to-be-alright” feeling is greeted by myself quite fondly. The stresses in and of life are temporarily forgotten or at least, dusted under the rug for now.

Essences of Elbow and Biffy Clyro are sweetly knitted to bring an emotional semblance that will make grown Men become children and Ladies weep with joy.

I find it quite gratifying being of Scottish descent that this is music which I feel is traditional to me. I feel I have to like it and fortunately, I certainly do. I even want to drink, be merry and relish in the sympathetic outcry. Skip The Youth for example has this haunting ambience on the intro followed with vocals wishing you to join in and rejoice.

The Winter Of Mixed Drinks is more than welcome no matter the level of sobriety.

Crookers

17 Mar

THE Italian’s have a great way or mixing up the genres with Electro-Rock and Techno-HipHop being quite popular to the Chianti & Pizzeria conceiver’s. For the latter however, we have Milan’s DJ/Producers, Crookers with their recent release Tons Of Friends. An album entirely of collaborations.

Soulwax, Will.I.Am, Kid Cudi, Miike Snow as well as others filling this up to be a 20 track LP, is quite a feat. It would’ve been a project lasting quite some weeks as timing the acts for visitation is likely to not have been an easy task.

Crude, filthy booms & claps superbly produced, lyrically bouncing with a certain uncouth attitude and sub-level bass under-layed deeply making me question the quality of my speakers.

I have no doubt that these boys will have this taken to the Platinum level. It will be appreciated by many whether you’re more into your Dance or more into your Hip Hip. If both then this is definitely a purchase for you. This amalgamated collection of tunes are all really good. With the dub tracks such as No Security ft. Kelis having some right grimey tones to it, to Royal T ft. Roisin Murphy with a vocal trance feel and then having a dancehall vibe with some Reggae vitality on Arena ft. Poirier & Face-T.

The 2-step style to me can be quite annoying as I don’t really know where the trails will lead me. On this it was interesting and I wasn’t disappointed. Only the organ mimicked keyboards on Transilvania ft. Steed Lord I found a little agitating but I can let that slide.

One which I am impressed with I have to say is the Blues tinged, fraught with bass tune with Tim Burgess singing on Lone White Wolf. You rarely hear anything resembling, yet I suspect you’ll be hearing at least something of Crookers in the not so distant future.

Chase and Status

12 Mar

Chase & Status have been around for a few years but it wasn’t until the recent remix of the White Lies’ release Death, that they caught my attention. The reason is quite simply, I do not like it.

So, as I will give everything a chance I investigated further into the band being as Mr Zane Lowe was raving about them. (I respect his judgement a vast majority of the time)

What I found was an an album called More Than Alot. Now this, THIS possessed a tune that made me shiver. Eastern Jam (which happens to be quite fortunately on their MySpace) made me bellow a roar of laughter in slight shock. What a “Cool As..” tune indeed!

More Than Alot begins with an easy listening, dreamscape DnB track which hooks you right into the album immediately with a steady pace making you question what the hell are they going to do next?! This is awesome!

Following that I swear has BBC Radio1′s, Scott Mills’ sidekick Chappers with a bunged up nose narrating through the Music Club. Got to love them bongo’s too.

Against All Odds features East Ham, Hip Hop Producer Kano vocalising a funky, headnodding, breakbeat floor-filler.

I could quite easily go on but the fact is, this album is a true delight with clean, tidy, seamless production with great, bouncing beats. The lovely Dub on Streetlife is sweet. SmashTV is an aggressive, club house wonder but if any deserve a mention it is Pieces featuring Plan B. When that kicks in, you damn well know about it. Thumping, height-of-the-evening, hardcore breaks. What impressed me most about this track is the way the two farthest ends of comparable genres are gelled and waxed together with a really shiney polish. Plan B’s had great backing. He’ll be facing the stratosphere destined to be in it after the release of his album The Defamation of Strickland Banks is out now. Hopefully his previous release Who Needs Action When You Have Words will arise once more.

More Than Alot the Drum and Bass, Breakbeat masterclass is out now. But at the minute, it’s all about the other Being.
