RE:SESSION

08 Jul

This band of brothers are not only fantastic friends, a great night out and musically talented in their roles, RE:SESSION are an Indie Pop-Rock Act with chemistry on the stage emitting an energy which is felt by all in any venue they perform in. Smiles cross over the faces of every watcher because you can empathise their own love for what it is they are doing.

Their main number is Get Away. A slightly progressive Indie style tune which is sweet with such an uplifting feel sprinkled with rock dust and an injection of rap. It’s a big crowd pleaser and definitely a sign for bigger stages to come after their London gig @ The O2 Arena. It’s a HUGE task for a new and unsigned group and very much a priviledge as well as being a sign of potentially being an extremely successful act. Check out Get Away – see below – and two others from their site.

As a live act, they tick all the right boxes. Take a quick look.

RE:SESSION – Come Together / Nothin’ Ever Happens (Anymore)

Neil Davison is the main driver of this journey from the middle of nowhere. An accomplished guitarist with good head for sound and structure, his playing abilities are that of the greats such as Satriani and Vai. With other influences akin to Coldplay and Radiohead the songs he writes are melodic, meaningful and they can also really rock. The guitars in this outfit are definitely not seconded by Nean Maskery. He’ll play anything and nail it well. Born to play in front of a crowd as his casual manner is a sign of great confidence and experience. His fluid rhythmic skills supporting Davison, play a solid structure to the tunes they perform.

The flowing bassline is brought to us by a very versatile gentleman. Drummer/singer/rythym guitarist, Andy Biff. He takes his playing very seriously and the fluent hummings in the background occasionally bounce out and fill out the songs even further.

With not one but two singers to the dextrous group, Chris George has progressed fantastically after taking the frontman role from near nothingness to a band heading for glory. He can certainly hit a note and bellow out a harmonious scream between his gravelly yet sultry tone. Their version of Journey’s Don’t Stop Believing is a fine example. A well received rendition. His advances from the early gigging days to the recent recordings show awesome potential in the great scheme of things to come. Young Warren Stanford is by no means a newcomer. The Other Singer alike to the Pyramid and Other Stages of the Glastonbury festival, he is by no means any less to the main. A swinger and crooner sound with a softer voice provides a subtle warmth to tracks such as Big Gun.

The time-keeper of the band has overcome the initial battle with confidence to play the drums due to the fact that you would not normally ask him to do a drum roll. Jonny Stumpster Eames is the one armed drummer with an electronic/acoustic hybrid kit. To “keep time” or provide a steady tempo and rhythmic foundation takes a certain skill. That is Jonny’s.

RE:SESSION are proud to have gone through the Regional Final and the Area Final rounds of the Live & Unsigned Battle Of The Bands competition. They now need your help and support to help win at the National Grand Final. Unfortunately tickets for the event which is on July 10th at indigO2 at the O2 Arena, London are now sold out. But please vote for RE:SESSION to win via text message, just send the word ‘unsigned11′ to 84222 and become a part of RE:SESSION history. I’ve just done it.

Good luck and best wishes.

The Black Keys

I will never say to other people that I know a lot about music. It is impossible to hear about everything that goes on in the World around us. So many times there are bands that don’t get the break that they need to be able to unleash the terrific tunes that they conceive. Sometimes they manage to do it but they don’t get heard by everyone in their targeted demographic. The record company’s sometimes fail on the Artists behalf.

I am just wondering how an awesome band such as The Black Keys have totally deserted my radar though.

I’ve never heard of them up until yesterday. I am entirely overwhelmed by the glorious psychedelic, Bluesy-Rock sound which could put many a 60′s Woodstock band to utter shame. This is superb!

BROTHERS is their 8th studio album – 9th if you count their collaborating work on Blackroc released last year – and I swear it is the most excellent piece of production I’ve heard quite possibly ever.

Having a sound that is so reminiscent to the likes of – Better still in fact – MUMFORD & SONS meeting THE DOORS on a comedown Sunday afternoon after a LED ZEPPELIN and ROLLING STONES joint venture.

Lyrically, every song tells a story. Musically this album is Harmonious Blues with a moody Rock and Indie style that sweetly hums along as an autobiographical moment to whatever stage of your life you’re currently in.

There is a song for everyone. I’m not going to go through all of them because quite honestly, it should only take one or two of them.

I am gong backwards for a change, checking out their previous material. I believe this is a great piece of songwriting. Awards will be magnetised to this record without doubt. And if I’m wrong, that means those who decide where the awards go to, are seriously very wrong indeed.

BROTHERS is released on the 18th May. For goodness sake, please your heart, soul and mind and get it. Pre-order it here. You won’t mind selling your soul to this. And yeah, you’ve got to watch the video’s below to meet Frank the Funkasaurus Rex.

Many thanks to npr.com/music for indirectly allowing me to do this review. To hear the album in it’s entirety before release, CLICK HERE! And pre-order it by clicking the iTunes link below.

THE MAN who managed to redefine the unwritten rules of Sex, Drugs and Rock N F’kn Roll is back. This time he’s out with friends on what is actually classed as his first solo album. What an ensemble of friends this guy has.

On this metal A-list they include Chris Cornell, Fergie, Iggy Pop, Ozzy, Lemmy and Dave Grohl to name a few. Working with the latter alongside old amigo Duff McKagen on the instrumental track Watch This, you expect Rock and what do you get? Pretty much what you ought to be with palm mutes everywhere, heavy riffs which will delightfully remind the old GNR fans have how it used to be.

This is a very American Rock sound rather than tipping into the heavier Metal side. It’s more melodic and pleasantly vocal with the harmonious backing. You know, like how Aerosmith would do it. However, there are one or two tracks that dive a little deeper. Nothing To Say featuring M. Shadow from Avenged Sevenfold possesses solid, lightening riffs. If you’ve got to the end of Guitar Hero 3, then you’ll be right with me on this one.

I feel a sense of achievement for him when he plays because no matter what’s has happened, he’s still going strong. He’s still got it. For an old school Rock fan, it’s like listening to an old friend from school who’s finally made it to the big-time.

This is a cool album, very solid, very typical almost with solo moments galore. I find it good to hear the collaborations working in Slash’s style of Rock, even though their are moments where he is tinkering in the singers more usual style like M. Shadow’s and also with Saint Is A Sinner featuring Rocco DeLuca which is more like a Spanish acoustic along with the big band style. Cracking production on that as well as throughout the whole record.

One track that makes me smile is We’re All Gonna Die featuring Iggy Pop. He sings a bit like Axl, more so when he does the speaking parts but considering you’ve two veteran Rockers who have both been on the brink of death through their antics over the decades, this track makes me nod rhythmically in empathy.

If Beautiful Dangerous featuring Fergie is not released as a single, the management need shooting. It’s the best song she’s ever sung on. The inner Rock Chick has been unleashed and the woman can knock out some notes indeed.

For now though, solid Rock N F’kn Roll dudes.

Black Rock by Joe Bonamassa

18 Apr

BLACK ROCK is the latest release from the Blues/Rock guitaring maestro that is, Joe Bonamassa.

I could say living legend but if he has only recently passed my ears then I’ve either my head in the sand or his riffs haven’t carried over to me far enough.

Having recently played at the Royal Albert Hall with living legend Eric Clapton – that was more appropriate I think – I noticed his performance is truly heartfelt, honestly passionate and very powerful too.

This is the kind of mature music my father would have listened to and loved. Now I have to say, being as the candles are further burning for me, I am falling for this too. This is done the way it should be.

He has great soul and a voice that simply speaks the truth. I have found that Blues music to this degree with quoting any movies has to be lived and experienced to be able to genuinely sing and play it with your heart and spirit. He feels the music he sings, it’s a part of him and the guitaring is a blessing. I have heard many acts over the years doing their best to eminate the greats but it is such a refreshing experience for me to listen to a great with some up-to-date – already – classics. Blue & Evil just rock.

The video below doesn’t get any fresher either.

GALVANIZED bass and searing electro beats muscling their way out of the cyberpunk bubble with a boom rather than a bang. As James Brown may say, this IS my bag.

This band with genuine aphrodisia are releasing their debut album with tunes that would perfectly suit the full moon moments where “The Bitten” change into the animals for the night unleashing deafening roars.

Thundering in after the first couple of bars on the single, Tales From The Doombox you know immediately that this is full-throttle, fast-lane, pedal to the floor. The second track intro to Street Soul Music decelerates slightly but cruises with a filthy, breakbeats style and hip-hop, reggae vocals as is Charge Me. Then it’s just a steady over-the-limit-pace all the way through. Grimey, dark, heavy screamo tech. With bands and groups such as those guys that names begin with the letter P, can simply do one. Combichrist twisted with the Qemists.

This is volcanic material. Hotter than a forest fire and more fluid rage than torrents on the Sarangetti River. Fierce, frenzied and intense, organic electro-punk.

Subsource have released a few tunes here and there before but this time round I’m hoping it to be their year. The Ides released at the beginning of the week will have currently been douse around the breakbeat venues with the support of Oli Cash of Far Too Loud providing a psybreaks remix.

Any festival goers in the UK last year who bypassed them should this year make a bee-line for them whatever stage they play. There is definitely something on the horizon, I’ll see you in Arcadia gents.

Tales from The Doombox is out now and available on iTunes by clicking the box below.

Airbourne

17 Mar

EVERYONE loves a good rock tune. Feel-good chemicals are naturally released in the brain caused by these vibrations emitting from the stereo. When The Darkness (bless ‘em) literally pierced the charts with the voice of a wailing pussycat and classic rock, guitar strokes it stirred many a maiden, had plenty of geezers waving their hands in the form of “The Horns” generally made lots of people smile.

Here we go again. However, this time no wailing. But this is a new prescription.

Airbourne have for me come out of nowhere. In fact, from Australia, with what I would only describe as PROPER Classic Rock. The sound of AC/DC, Iron Maiden, Motorhead, Judas Priest, all acts under the true rock n roll umbrella.

These boys have done something absolutely spot on. They’ve done, absolutely, nothing new whatsoever. And that is a good thing.

The term, “If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it” is well more than apt here. With the old school rockers bowing out gracefully, apart from Lemmy of course, these guys have just carried on from where they have all left off.

Stereotyping is uncontrollable here. Long hair, wristbands, ripped jeans, off-black T-shirts, Marshall’s and of course, of COURSE, the ESP Explorer. Everything you would ever associate with the genre is all in the package of this whisky-on-the-rocks, breaking-the-law, aces-high-octane and energetic, riff laden tuneage.

All the tracks on No Guts No Glory are headbangers. They’re quite simply brilliant. There’s no point breaking out particular tracks that stand out because from Born To Kill through to track 13, Back On The Bottle, we’ve lead guitar master-classes, 20-a-day vocals, solid, rumbling bass tones and drumming with the never excessive, high hat slamming.

The perfect formula. Outstanding.

Casino

18 Feb

Now, this is has the intentions on being a short review of little words because of course, music really should sell itself.

Casino are a band from Birmingham formerly known as SpiderSimpson, formerly known as Casino. (long story)

I found these guys on MySpace about 3 years ago and have periodically peeked in when the thought passes my mind to see what news they may have and on so doing that today, I’ve seen some major changes.

Last time I visited the band there was talk of disbandment and I thought it was a great, great pity because not since the Stereophonics had there been a group in Rock to just wet my appetite as much as them. With only a few singles released, I had the opinion of them being the next big thing. Sadly, it was not meant to be. Or so I thought.

With the reincarnation of Casino at the tale end of last year we have them back, ready and gearing and just you wait for it.

After one or two side projects the band have been busy in other areas, but let me tell you this people; I believe that Rock in this country is slowly dying, I believe that this is the band that can save it. This one of the best rock bands I have heard for a longtime.

I’ll not come out with any witty, glorifying my intelligence kind of write-up. But I genuinely believe that their music certainly does, speak for itself. A Heavy Metal Machine is what we need and want.

Four free tracks are available on their ReverbNation page or you can grab The Spider Simpson Incident from iTunes.

Green Day

08 Feb

I’m probably just not a fan of their work but the latest Green Day album 21st Century Breakdown really didn’t do a great deal for me at first.

The initial tracks played on the record just seemed to be all to familiar, very basic and for someone who is a fond lover of dance music, dare I say, repetitive?

If it wasn’t for the crispness in the production then I would’ve mistaken it for a GCSE music project put together by some pothead students the morning it had to have been handed in for marking.

Comparing it to tracks unmistakeningly excellent like When September Ends, Boulevard Of Broken Dreams, Time Of Your Life, initially, it wouldn’t have woken me up to the revolution it appears they’re trying to instigate. But they did.

And then, Last Night On Earth. Thank goodness. Another classic Green Day soft-tissue-requesting track that’ll melt that hearts of the strurness rock maidens. Cool track, very balanced and flowed through nicely. After that some of the songs got better, in fact, I’d say they all did. Actually rather good too. I’m not a Green Day fan as a rule. East Jesus Nowhere kicked off the start of the better half of the album really and if it wasn’t for the poor start of pubescent sounding potheads trying to get a grade.

Great album altogether. It definitely grew on me. Maybe their Rock Band game will do the same..

Evile

29 Sep

I love the fact that these boys from Huddersfield in the North-West England are the thrash metal lords of darkness at this present time with their latest release Infected Nations.

Evile must have been overwhelmd at the chance of recording with Russ Russell shaping them out. These are classic, plectrum destroying riffs which just blow you away with their intricacy, their pace and the fact that is sounds pretty damn cool too. The drummers got some beef, the singer has audacity and the guitarist will just rip you up, spit you out into the mosh pit without a care nor a flinch.

This ranks with the top dogs from the days of old such as their influences Sepultura, Slayer and Metallica. Old friends of mine they are and I now call Evile as friends of mine too after Bathe In Blood. A cracking number.

Priceless production work, priceless riffs and solo’s that will blind you and make you twitch.

Infected Nations is out now.

Stever

29 Sep

There is something fascinating, mysterious and rather charming about Karen Stever.

The music she writes is very Marilyn but with more clarity. Her style is more alike Lacuna Coil and there is an awesome feel to it all despite the darkness that accompanies it.

The Stever tracks I’ve heard certainly have a medlodic, goth, industrial essence but tweaking resemblances of Tori Amos, Kate Bush and more so Alanis Morisette and Evanescence. The happy-go-lucky intro and fill-ins on Funeral Mute add a quirkiness to a very full track being as it contains heavy distortion, anthemic keyboards and is almost too cluttered being a little “not knowing what it is” kind of number.

The rest of the tracks are great records. I persoanlly like the fact that her guitarist has down-tuned on Shame On Me, it adds a huge wedge of grit that is very suited to her vocals.

We need to hear more like that.

The effort, blood, sweat and tears that Karen has put into her work is highly commendable with her own artwork, her own material. It is all Stever. 5 Stars for that without doubt.

I do feel that the production of her work is a touch OTT which is spoiling some of the simplicity that is within the tracks. They don’t need to be full of everything and if they do, then the orchestration needs improvements.

Worth a look indeed. If you don’t then shame on you. Not shame on me because I have and I like her.
