Within And Without by Washed Out | Album Review

Amongst the blogosphere 28 year old Greene has made a name for himself albeit under his now professional title. Having begun as a Bedroom Producer his work has travelled far and wide, stretching far, far away from his relatively humble beginnings rooted rural Georgia, US.

For me, I sometimes come to a point when I either can’t be bothered or I feel uninspired. Inspiration is important to me. I need good music to write about if I’m to continue blogging about it. Fortunately, Sub Pop Records has yet again, another wondrous signing to their label. This is Ernest Greene with his debut album called ‘Within And Without’ and he is better known as Washed Out. Once again, I now feel inspired.

Within And Without begins with myself having Stone Roses flashbacks on the initial track Eyes Be Closed – below. The breathe-easy sound is reminiscent of the chillout sessions when the late night raves close down at daft o’clock in the morning of the next day. ‘Chillaxing’, earthy psychedelia and warm-bath soothing.

One or two of the tracks are very similar to 80′s synth-pop, others are not far off ‘beach house’ tunes yet they all have the same feel.

If there isn’t any Moby inspiration here then I’d be a little surprised as he too has created, sung and produced all of his records – or at least has the ability to do so. Where Moby is more “heartfelt techno” at times, Washed Out is the after party. Lovely work and very clever too.

The tracks have the ability to levitate the weight from your shoulders. They are like warm log fires, romantic, candle-lit dinners and sweet poems on St. Valentine’s Day.

I like the variations in drum tracks, the different levels of bassline rumblings. A good few superstar DJ’s tend to use the same bass rumbles or chords over and over again. They are good, hence the reason they are constantly used but musically, this is far better than a lot out there. Some of the tracks sound more electronic rather than actual instruments being used but on others you can’t tell. That makes each and every track individual and not half arsed. It shows care, attention and also passion as well as positive belief. It’s all optimistic stuff even though some tunes like ‘Before’ might be on top of the list of your very own funeral playlist. Very endearing.

There are no straight forward vocal tracks either, they’re all tweaked with enchanting, echoing effect sustaining for at least another beat. A few of the instruments are too. Gliding and floating along effortlessly saying “Nevermind” to anything and everything that will come your way whilst this album is playing.

Within And Without is that bubble wrapping around your personal mind-space, keeping all negativity out and the ‘couldn’t care less’ attitude within.

The track ‘Amor Fati’ is an official free download and can be downloaded here.

Inspiring work.
