The dance music industry occasionally gets their feathers ruffled when a newcomer comes into the scene, but rather than coming up through the underground rankings there is a young producer who breaking some ground and remixing it up with the global stars. This release will go boom!
There is a joke now going around. It is not a nasty joke, just one which causes a little embarrassment which I will get to at the end of this post but first, let me tell you about this absolutely shocking EP release from one of the best newcomers onto the DnB and Dubstep scene in quite sometime. This is the ‘Skyward’ EP by Xilent.
Eryk Kowalczyk is @Xilent and he currently dwells in Edinburgh, Scotland after leaving motherland Poland to study. After a small string a releases which have caught the eyes and ears of some of the established big guns such as Alex Metric, J Majik & Wickaman and I believe also Chase And Status.
On this exquisite material we kick off firstly with ‘Skyward II’. A Dubstep tune with ferocious mids, stuttering bass, harmonic and orchestral flows of delightful trance-like tones and a vibe of tenacity, audacity and soulfully uplifting. The kind of tune that you would get when Nero goes a bit mental and Skrillex on one of his good days. It is full, frantic and wonderfully balanced.
‘Skyward I’ is the Drum And Bass take from the release. Still possessing the same sweetness the tune has been kicked up a level in pace and has been slightly reconfigured. The track has an interesting progressive build-up. As it fills out in stages it comes together like an interlocking Transformer. The mechanics of the track of you like come together with one part extraterrestrial bass, the other a solid groove and then the wavy melody which sits on top producing ‘Skyward I’ the drum and bass dance-floor destroyer with the tracks symphonic barbarity being it’s weapon.
On ‘For Once’ featuring vocalist Skyflake the format is similar. The subtle build, the teasing bassline with the pretty vocals over the top and then the euphoric break which is then followed by the meaty, electronic groove that gets the whole room skanking. This is on the brink of commercial dubstep because of the overall sound is one which can be appreciated by the masses and not just the most hardcore of fans.
Now this is a tune. This tune definitely has the capability of breaking a lot of dubstep records because ‘Gravity’ featuring Tali – who we know from working on material from Dirtyphonics, The Freestylers and more so Chase And Status – can go stratospheric. It has the clubland power, the commercial chart grace and combined should indeed stretch across in a high position in many a download chart. This is the kind of dubstep which a lot of people appreciate. It has a rhythm, a beat you can hear and feel and of course get the kind of groove which you can get your freak on.
After the success of his previous works for such a newcomer along with the stunning quality of this release we will definitely see and hear a damn sight more from Xilent in 2012 if we don’t by the end of December.
The joke I mentioned at the beginning of this post? The joke is on a majority of dubstep and drum and bass producers. This excellent material was created by a young, university student and it is better than a majority of works out amongst us today.
The immense ‘Skyward’ EP by Xilent will be released by Audioporn Records on December 5th.
