Breakspoll 2012 Event Review [Exclusive]

Breakspoll 2012 Event Review

As the body-clock returns to normality, the cliche dust settles and the shock wears itself away, the Breakspoll 2012 – International Breakbeat Awards were this weekend at Cable in London. I was there with a boat load of underground stars and witnessed the awards collected. Here we see and hear, who won what.

Now that my body-clock has resumed to a reasonable level after the long-haul evening at the Breakspoll 2012 – International Breakbeat Awards held at the signal-less venue that is Cable in the UK capital of London, let me tell you (like you don’t already know) who won what and what with.

Built into the walls and foundations of London Bridge below the train tracks of the great British transport system this solidly built space full to the brim of big, bad bass (almost too much so) this night was an absolute treasure. Apart from the occasional double-booking of acts and crossover of set times the night appeared to run very smoothly indeed as the smoke machine bellowed out the dingy scene in this deep, dark and dirty evening of broken beats.

It was of course packed out of DJs, producers, label owners, station proprietors, website owners, event managers, promoters and behind-the-scenes executives along with most of the nominees who managed to attend the underground, star-studded evening and some of which hopped on planes building up a good few points on their Air Miles card.

From Spaniards to Italians, Australians to Hungarians, it was very much a multi-cultural night, all in the name of Breaks with some surprising and some very unsurprising winners.

After spending the night bending the ears to an exhaustive list of people picking up gossip, super-exclusive news, secrets and the like I did manage to shake my backside on the floor myself. Some of the acts that I was in awe of mainly were without doubt Krafty Kuts and double award winner A.Skillz, Deekline & Ed Solo but scratch-king and twice DMC champion JFB was a pleasure to hear along with the Psybreaks maestros Monk3ylogic, the amazing Specimen A and the Jungle-Breaks pioneers, Pyramid who destroyed it in the last set of the night. It was a shame some of the star DJ’s started so early so there were many that missed out on some seriously high quality tunes. And no doubt exclusive works too. Aquasky were on so early that by the time most people were in the club, they were on their way out which personally, I found a shame.

Compiled below is a rundown of the winners, some sample tunes to understand why they are winners and who I tip to watch out for in the very long run-up to next years awards which I hope to be held at this superb, intimate venue.

I managed to get some pictures of the night thanks to my incredibly brilliant friend Davey Sampson who accompanied myself to the event but smoke machines can be a bit of an obstacle! Check them out on the thetruejoe90 Facebook page here where it will be tagging city, the Flickr account here or by clicking the sidebar widget on the left hand-side linking straight to them. Help yourself, they’re yours if you want them.

And finally,

Outstanding ContributionThe Freestylers. Not many Breakbeat acts have managed to take breaks into the Top 40, across the World and back again several times over so quite deservingly I feel that they get the ‘Outstnading Contribution’ award.

After a long night, I did learn of a few acts that must be watched over the forthcoming months. Pyramid as they push forward the Jungle-Breaks movement, new works from Monk3ylogic, A.Skillz, Krafty Kuts, and next week, Elite Force with his RVMPD2 release. Producer Parker as well, But the real one to watch for this year for me has to be Specimen A. I will not and can not tell you why as that is deemed a trade secret, but let me assure you it is going to be HUGE!

And that’s it, all over for another year so all that remains is congratulations to all of the winners, the nominees and also to the organisers of @Breakspoll for such a sterling evening and a great success.

Make sure you stay updated to thetruejoe90 because after this weekend just gone I know for a fact that there are loads of good tunes coming, and I mean good.
